城市规划系前身为原武汉建材学院建工系，1979年招收城市规划专业本科生，是中国最早开办城市规划专业的三所院校之一。1985年2月，武汉建材学院的城市规划专业迁至武汉城建学院新校址，并成立城市规划系，2000年5月并入新组建的华中科技大学建筑与城市规划学院。
城市规划系于1979年开始招收四年制本科生，1994年获城市规划与设计硕士学位授予权，2005年获城市规划与设计二级学科博士学位授予权；2011年获城乡规划学一级学科博士学位、城乡规划学（科学学位）和城市规划硕士（专业学位）授予权。2012年设立城乡规划学一级学科博士后流动站。
1990年代以来，面对学科发展的新形势和新要求，本学科点坚持引人才、提层次、建团队、强组织举措，形成了年轻化、国际化、高端化的教师梯队和研究方向。本系现有在岗教师33名，其中教授11人，副教授13人，讲师9人。教师博士化率达到80%以上。学科形成五大研究方向:区域与城镇空间规划;可持续城市规划与设计;镇村发展与乡村规划;地域城乡聚落遗产保护;城市交通与土地利用。
2012年以来，本系教师主持国家及省部级纵向科研项目60余项，横向科研及工程设计项目300余项，获省部级以上科研、规划设计奖60余项，深度参与全国城乡规划实践，成为我国重要的城乡规划决策智库，为地方建设及政府决策发挥了关键作用。
多年来在国际合作办学方面也不断推进，已与美国亚利桑那州立大学、佛罗里达大学、英国邓迪大学、法国瓦尔德塞纳建筑学院四校达成联合培养本、硕士生协议。此外，每年还开展有国际化课程、中外联合设计workshop及欧洲短期国际化访学课程。
作为全球知名的空间规划创新研究中心，全国一流的城乡规划专业教育基地，长期坚持开放性、创新性、实践性的人才培养模式，为中国城市规划建设领域培养了大量具有宽广国际视野、前沿创新思维、综合实践能力的城乡规划创新型、领军型人才，本、硕、博毕业生达2000余名。

The Department has its origin from Architectural Engineering in the former Wuhan Building Materials Industry College. It started the undergraduate program of Urban Planning in 1979. And in 1985 the Urban Planning Program was relocated to the new campus of Wuhan Urban Construction College and thus forms a new department. In May 2000, it was merged into the newly-established School of Architecture and Urban Planning of Huazhong University of Science and Technology (HUST).
In 1979, the Department started to recruit students for the four-year Bachelor’s Degree of Urban Planning. In 1994 and 2005, it was granted the right to confer Master’s Degree of Urban Planning & Design and the Doctoral Degree, respectively. In 2011, the Department was awarded the right to confer Doctoral Degree in Urban and Rural Planning, and the Master’s Degree of Urban Planning (professional degree). In 2012, a post-doctoral research station for urban and rural planning was established .
In light of the emerging new conditions and requirements of programs for master’s degree, since 1990 the Department has insisted on attracting education talents, improving program quality, building research teams and strengthening organization capacity. Thus, we succeeded in building up a younger, international and high-level team of teachers and a series of frontier research directions. Now there are 33 academic staffs, including 11 professors, 13 associate professors and 9 lecturers. More than 80% of them have a doctorate degree.
Now the Department has an integrated research and education system, with five main research fields: Regional and urban spatial planning, Sustainable urban planning and design, Village and small town’s development and rural planning, Regional cultural heritage conservation, Urban transportation and land use.
Besides the priority of lecturing to students, the academic staffs in the department have also been engaged in planning practice all through China which offers fundamental consultancies for national and local governments. Since 2012, more than 60 National Natural Science Foundation projects has been granted to the academic staffs from the Department, and the staffs have also conducted more than 300 planning projects. Of these projects, more than 60 have won provincial or ministerial awards.
In the last 10 years, international cooperation in organizing joint- programs in the department has been strengthened. The department has already signed cooperative agreement on the long reciprocal joint training programs for Bachelor’s degree and Master’s degree with Arizona State University and Florida University in the America, Dundee University in Britain, and École nationale supérieure d'architecture de Paris-Val de Seine in France. In addition, every year the department runs international courses, Sino-abroad joint design workshops and international visiting programs.
As a well-established international innovation research center in spatial planning, and one of the top education bases in China, the Department has always been pursuing openness, innovation and professional capability in running the programs for the students. Since its foundation, more than 2000 students have once studied in the department and been awarded bachelor’s, master’s or doctoral degree. These students have formed a strong and competitive working force for the profession of urban research, urban design and urban development in China.
