The School of Architecture and Urban Planning of Huazhong University of Science and Technology (HUST) was founded with the combination of the School of Architecture of the former Huazhong University of Technology and the Department of Architecture and Urban Planning of the former Wuhan Urban Construction Institute in 2000. It now consists of the Department of Architecture, the Department of Urban Planning, the Department of Design, the Department of Landscape Architecture, the New Architecture Journal, Library Classification and Management, Hubei Environment and Architecture Experimental Teaching Demonstration Center and Hubei Urbanization Engineering Research Center.
The Department of Architecture of the former Huazhong University of Technology was established in 1982, and hired Professor Zhou Buyi, graduated from Columbia University in the United States, as the first dean. Most of the other founders of the department are well-known domestic professors. The former Wuhan Urban Construction Institute was the first school for urban construction in China. Its history dates back to 1952 when the School of Architectural Engineering was founded. It originated from the Lushan Construction Engineering School which was founded in 1952. In 1973, it amalgamated with Beijing Building Materials College and renamed Wuhan Building Materials College. In 1979, Wuhan Building Materials College established the specialty of Urban Planning. In 1985, the Department of Urban Planning was founded with two specialties — Urban Planning and Landscape Architecture. In 1993, Heshui Planning Department was changed to the Department of Urban Planning and Architecture including two specialties — Urban Planning and Architecture.
Since its establishment, the School has witnessed a tremendous development in organizational restructuring, faculty augmentation, amendment of educational schemes, and improvement of teaching conditions, thus finally accomplished the re-combination of programs and construction of related disciplines, thereby embarking on a new road. The talent-cultivation enjoys a high reputation. The department has established the system of joint training(Dual Degree) and exchange cooperation with more than ten universities from Macau and Taiwan, as well as foreign countries such as the United States, Britain, France, Germany. A group of outstanding graduates has been sent to Harvard, Cambridge and other world renowned universities. In addition, a large number of alumni have become the heads, leaders and backbones of the design and research institutions at home and aboard.
The School consists of four first-class disciplines: Architecture, Urban and Rural Planning, Landscape Architecture, Design Studies and Art Theory. There are two first-class discipline doctoral programs which are Architecture and Urban and Rural Planning, and two second-class discipline doctoral programs which are Engineering landscape Design and Interior Design. It has two first-class discipline post-doctoral position: Architecture, Urban and Rural Planning. There are five undergraduate programs: Architecture, Urban and Rural Planning, Landscape Architecture, Environment and Design, and Digital Media Art. It provides eight postgraduate degree training programs including professional degrees and academic ones. For the two first-class disciplines of Architecture, Urban and Rural Planning, the School has the right to confer the Bachelor’s degree, the Master’s degree and the Doctoral degree. As for Landscape Architecture and Design Studies, it is the Bachelor’s degree and the Master’s degree that the school can grant. In the fourth round of 2016 national Discipline Ranking assessments, Architecture and Urban and Rural Planning ranked sixth in China; Landscape Architecture and Design achieved remarkable progress, all showing promising trend of development.
Currently, the School has 110 full-time teachers, 20 administrative and assistant staff, more than 1200 full-time undergraduates, 600 postgraduate students, and about 80 PhD students.
